How Freight Class is Calculated

Freight class is determined by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) and is primarily based on density (pounds per cubic foot).

Other factors include stowability, handling, and liability, but density is the most quantifiable metric.

Density Guidelines

Class 50: Over 50 lbs/ft³ (Clean Freight, fits on pallet, durable)
Class 70: 15-22.5 lbs/ft³ (Car parts, accessories, boxing)
Class 100: 8-10 lbs/ft³ (Boat covers, canvas, wine cases)
Class 250: 3-4 lbs/ft³ (Bamboo, mattresses, aluminum tubes)
Class 400: Less than 1 lb/ft³ (Deer antlers, ping pong balls)
